DakshinaChitra Museum , a project of Madras Craft Foundation was opened to the public on 14th December 1996. The Museum is located on ten acres of land on East Coast Road – 25kms South of Madras, on the way to Mamallapuram.
The museum promotes the arts and crafts, folk performing arts, domestic architecture and lifestyles of India with particular emphasis on the four Southern states of India. DakshinaChitra is an open-air museum showcasing 18 historical houses which we have purchased, taken down and reconstructed at DakshinaChitra.
These houses represent architectural styles of different regions of the South. The collections are primarily objects used in these homes during the 19th – early 20th century.
The focus of the museum is to provide the public with a glimpse into their heritage and to appreciate their everyday heritage and also to begin to think about how the past has resulted in the present, particularly to how people regarded the environment, and how it is linked and relevant for the future.
