This historic temple located at thambu chetty street is dedicated to lord Shiva as mallikeshwarar and Devi Shakthi as Maragadambal. Located in the middle of busy business street of sowcarpet, this temple is the icon of traditional fine architecture. The temple is supposed to be constructed around 400 years ago and there were two theories about the temple.
1. As this place once had jasmine garden and the name mallikeshwarar arrived due to this. The Tamil definition for jasmine is mallikai.
2. other theory is that the temple got the name mallikeshwarar named after Mallikarjunan of the Vijayanagar kingdom.
The temple has the main deity of Siva lingam called Mallikeswarar, Vishnu, Brahma, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Naga statues, Balamurugan, Navagrahas, Somaskandar and Nayanamargals.
Important days of the temple are pradosha where you can see people coming in numbers to get blessings from the deity.
One of the unique features is that the temple gopuram is one of the biggest gopurams in northern part of Chennai and the ‘Navagraha’ deities in this temple will be seen sitting on their respective ‘vahanams’, which is not so in the other temples. The temple has a ‘Rishabha vahanam’ made of silver and gold.
One of the finest temples located in Chennai city which is very divine and also an old one.
Been to this temple and it is being situated in the mid of busy streets of sowcarpet. Guess this is the only quiet place in that area. The temple is famous for its architecture and lord Shiva. Used to visit the place when I am stressed.
